What do you run in New piston rings?
The piston and rings go in absolutely dry but the rest of the engine is lubricated with oil or Lubriplate. I have used this method for over 20 years on car, motorcycle, and aircraft engines with good results. Vernon Fueston ([email protected]) on NOC-L 11th. Apr 1997
How often should I add oil to my piston rings?
This means you’ll have to regularly add oil to your vehicle rather than wait the standard 3,000 to 5,000 miles before you do it. If you find yourself adding oil more often than you should, then have a mechanic inspect your piston rings.
What happens when the piston rings on a car fail?
When the piston rings fail, they cannot keep the oil from leaking into the cylinder; as soon as the oil leaks through, it will get mixed up in the combustion process. Slowly and gradually, all your engine oil will leak into the cylinder, and you will witness a drop in your car’s engine oil level. You would need to get an oil refill more frequently.
How long does it take to seat new piston rings?
Three of the last four engines I’ve put new rings in have taken in excess of 1,000 miles to seat the rings, with oil fouling of the plugs a problem at low and moderate speeds. I’ve used the traditional method of 300 grit hone and assembly lube on the pistons and rings.

What kind of oil to use on piston rings?
It is highly recommended that the oil be changed and “running in oil” be used with your new piston rings. Use a 30 weight non-detergent oil, available at any auto parts store. Do not use any specialty oils or Castro GTX. Your piston rings will never seat. Modern oil is a lot different than the oils out only a decade ago.
