What happens when you refill your gas tank?

Q: When refilling gas tank, gas overflows before tank is full. Often times, as I’m pumping gas, the pump will shut off because the end of the nozzle touches gasoline. I then see gas flowing out of the tank, so I stop. I then get back into my car only to find my gas gauge reads half a tank.

What causes gas to come out of filler neck?

The carbon in the canister absorbs the gas vapors and the air is allowed to escape into the atmosphere thru the vent valve and the vent valve hose. If there’s a restriction in this system, and pump nozzle shuts off, pressure can build in the gas tank causing gas to spew out the filler neck. Have someone inspect the EVAP system for a restriction.
