Should you check your Harley oil hot or cold?
On any of the Harley models(except V-rod) you always check the oil level on the Jiffy stand(aka kick stand), and yes I said it folks Jiffy stand. Whether your bike is hot or cold doesn’t matter because on the dipstick there are two readings, one level being the cold level which will be lower than the hot reading.
Do you check Motorcycle Oil cold or hot?
Yes, you always check an engine’s oil when it’s hot. However, you also check it AFTER a 30 second cool down. You don’t just shut it down and check it. You need to shut it down, wait 30 seconds, and then check it.

By checking hot, the oil pump scavenges the oil out of the crankcase and pumps it back into the oil tank, which is where you are measuring the level….. not the crankcase as with the majority of automotive engines. When you change oil, why don’t you just remember where the level is on the stick when cold. Then if you check it again cold, you have a reference point.
