Is there a coolant leak in my 2016 Golf R?
I have a 2016 R with 24k miles. Past few weeks noticed a smell of hot coolant when garaging after drive. No evidence of leak on garage floor but coolant reservoir was almost at the ‘low’ level line. Topped up and monitored. Booked in to dealer for a visual check of the underneath engine parts.

The airlock is a really common and known issue, air not expelled from system at the factory leaches out over time causing coolant level to drop so it can appear to be a leak but in this case it’s not. The application of factory VW warranty can be very rule bound.

Can a water pump leak cause a coolant leak?
Unless it is an actual leak, whereby usually some evidence to be seen or smelt. Water pump is a common failure. Coolant leaks caused by the thermostat housing/water pump are reasonably common; mine was noted at routine service, and fixed under warranty. Why does the coolant keep dropping on my VW Golf?
When I do, the coolant is below the minimum level. Top it up with water and its fine, till it drops again. Whenever I park up at work for the day, there is a very small residue of water under the car, so its obviously leaking from somewhere. Checked the car this morning, and no sign of any leaking.

How to fix leaking gasket on Mk4 Golf?
With the innner panel unbolted, remove the lower portion of the gasket (along the bottom and maybe 6-8″ up either side), give the area a good scrub with a stiff brush, wipe down with meths and dry. Run a healthy bead of Silicone (or similar) a along where the gasket used to be. Screw the inner panel back on and you should have it sorted
