Is it normal for a hemi to make a lifter noise?

I have owned a 5.7 hemi since 2009 and they do have a slight lifter noise pretty much constantly. It is not abnormal. A loud lifter noise (clattering is what i call it) is not however normal and the vehicle will make it if it sits for an extended amount of time regardless of the filter type you use.

What causes the lifters to tap on a Dodge Hemi?

There has been much speculation about what causes the lifters to tap on some hemis, especially the 5.7-liter V-8, however there is no technical service bulletin or recall on this engine from Dodge. If your hemi has lifters tapping, it is important to check the amount of engine oil and make sure you are using the right type of oil for the vehicle.

Why does my Hemi engine make a ticking noise?

At first, it starts as a ticking noise and then it gets worse and worse until the engine starts to misfire on hard acceleration. You might even get P0300, and P0308 fault codes. At that point, the needle bearings on the lifters start to seize and the now stuck lifters start to eat away at the camshaft lobes.

When does a noisy lifter start the engine?

Depending upon the type of noise and it’s span, we can decide how serious the noisy lifter is. Usually, the noisy lifters produce some sort of tapping noise during the first few seconds after the starting of the engine.

When to replace the lifters on a Mopar Hemi?

Typical lifespan we have seen of the MOPAR lifters is approx. 75,000 miles in the HEMI. If you are performing engine work and are nearing this mileage we highly recommend installing a fresh set of lifters while the engine is apart. Cylinder heads must be removed to replace lifters.

What kind of lifters do I need for a hemi?
