How can you tell if your car thermostat is stuck?
To quickly tell if your thermostat is stuck, watch the flow of coolant through your radiator. For a more accurate test, measure the temperatures of the engine and the hose leading to the radiators to see if they’re similar.
How is the radiator connected to the engine?
There are two hoses between the radiator and the engine. The top hose is connected to the engine via a thermostat housing. The thermostat is what determines the reading on the temperature gauge on the dash. If the vehicle does not have a gauge, it will have a “dummy light.”.

What happens when the radiator thermostat is stuck?
You can tell the thermostat is stuck closed by carefully touching the radiator hoses. The top one will feel hot, yet the bottom hose will remain cold. When the thermostat sticks open, the engine will never reach operating temperature, which negatively impacts gas mileage.
Where is the thermostat located on a car?
To control the temperature, the thermostat sits at the end of the top radiator hose, keeping coolant in the engine block until it is needed to cool the radiator, before being pumped out through the bottom radiator hose. When the engine reaches ideal operating temperature, the thermostat opens and allows the cooling system to flow freely.
Why is coolant building up on my radiator?
Typically it is because the hose or the plastic neck that connects it to the radiator/component has failed. You will want to inspect both sides of the problem hose, and determine if the clamp is doing its job. Considering it is the top hose, the coolant is coming from the thermostat and flowing down through the radiator to be cooled.
Can a radiator get stuck in a heater core?
The heater core looks a lot like the radiator in miniature scale. In fact, the inside of the heater core has a similar network of small gauge tubing, which works to produce hot air for the heating system. If scales or debris break away from the radiator piping, it could end up stuck in the small tubing of the heater core.
