The 10W-40 or the gear oil, either one, should be fine. Some people run the gear oil and some people run the 10W-40 and I haven’t seen any problems running either one. The only thing that’s inside the transfer case is two gears and the associated bearings that the gear shafts ride on. Either one is sufficient to lubricate the gears and bearings.
