When did new job seekers allowance start?
The 1995 Act introduced the term job-seeking to describe a new benefit. The Jobseeker’s Allowance Regulations 1996 (S1 1996/207) were produced within a period of six months from the act coming into force, with the change of Income Support provision to Jobseekers Allowance occurring on 7 October 1996.
How far back can you claim job seekers allowance?

What’s the difference between job seekers allowance and universal credit?

How long is new style JSA paid for?
182 days
If you qualify, you can get New Style JSA for up to 182 days. After this your work coach will talk to you about your options. If you qualify for both New Style JSA and Universal Credit, any New Style JSA you receive will be taken into account as income for Universal Credit.
How long do you get JSA for?
Contribution-based JSA is paid for up to 6 months, but only if you paid enough Class 1 National Insurance contributions when you were working. You can get it even if your partner works or if you have savings. The calculator will work out if you are entitled to contribution-based JSA.
Can you claim JSA after 6 months?
You can get ‘new style’ JSA for up to 182 days (about 6 months). After this you can talk to your work coach about your options. Check if you’re eligible for Universal Credit. If you are, you could get Universal Credit at the same time or instead of ‘new style’ JSA.
What happens when my JSA runs out?
If your income-based JSA is stopped, and you do not have enough money to live on, you may be able to get a hardship payment. This is a reduced amount of JSA . You’ll only be able to receive a hardship payment if your claim has not been closed and you’re doing all you can to find work.
