While getting on a bit now in the years and with 180,000km it does need some work done. It has had a few little problems over the years most being common faults that tend to be expensive. The most expensive being rebuilt gearbox which also went through a couple of speed sensors that broke and would send it into limp home mode.

My ml 270 cdi 2003 has just started to loose power (sound familiar!) – but not all of the time. When you drive off in the morning the car works fine if you put your foot down you can feel the car accelerate and hear the turbo kick in with the engine revving past 4000 rpm.

The STAR machine picked it up straight away. If you’re anywhere near Milton Keynes get over to Autoclass and they’ll give you an honest opinion. As above, have it plugged in to STAR and stop the guesswork. It’s in limp-home mode for a reason. When this happened to my W164 320 CDI it turned out to be the turbo vanes sticking.
