How many gallons of water can a footwell hold?
The rear passenger footwell can hold 1.5+ gallons of water. Our mechanic got the sunroof drains cleaned out, but it set us back $400 in labor. That did NOT include doing any carpet removal or drying. The behavior you described when the front of the car is elevated is exactly what I saw on our 2013 C300.
Why is there water in my passenger footwell?
After heavy rains we were seeing water in the passenger footwell. I cleaned out the drains in the cowl (which desperately needed it) but that didn’t solve it. I pulled the glovebox to do a little digging and found that the source of the water was the HVAC cutout on the firewall.

The hole size is about a pinky finger size. The two rear holes are hard to reach so it can be a challenge to unclog them, but the front two holes can be unclogged using the method above. Where did the water go in the back seat?
I had 3 gallons of water spill in my back seat which disappeared so fast the carpet didn’t get wet. Turns out the water went into a subfloor beneath the carpet and got into, and ruined, my electronics under the drivers seat. I believe there were 5 components which cost ~$5,000.
Why does my footwell leak when it rains?
That’s usually caused by either a leaking heater core (does it smell like coolant?) or a leaking condensation line on the AC unit (it will appear to be water). It could always be a leak in the footwell or the windows too, but that would only appear when there is rain. I would have the windshield resealed first. does this happen only after it rains?

Where was the wet area in my car?
The wet area was limited to the section closer to the door and near the footrest. The car had been sitting all day since I drove it to work and was out in the rain for several hours.
