How does a charge warning light work?
(ED: The ignition light is used to tell when a generator (or alternator) is charging the battery. When the light is on, it means that you are running off the battery or discharging the battery. When the output of the generator is lower than the voltage of the battery, the light will be on.
Why is my generator light on?
The “generator” light coming on dimly is usually an indication of one or more of the three diodes in the alternator have failed–it’ll still put out “some” charge, but not 100%,and it can let the battery discharge to ground, through the faulty diodes.. This is assuming all the wiring is good, hooked up correctly,etc..
Can a voltage regulator cause starting problems?
A bad voltage regulator may cause it to simply not work or behave erratically. You’re not likely to be able to start the car at all, but even if you could, it wouldn’t be wise to do so without knowing how fast you’re driving, how much fuel you have left, and other critical info.
What does the charge indicator light mean on a car?
Indicator Light On Usually, the first sign that your charging system is in trouble is a “battery,” “ALT,” or “CHARGE” warning light illuminating on your instrument panel while driving. It means that the alternator voltage output is below 12 volts, or over its limit or has stopped charging the battery and your car is running on battery power.
