How do you replace a temperature control sensor?
Let’s Get Started
- Release the Cooling System Pressure. Locate and slowly remove the cooling system pressure cap to relieve the system of any residual pressure.
- Locate the Coolant Sensor.
- Remove the Electrical Connector.
- Remove the Coolant Sensor.
- Install the New Coolant Temperature Sensor.
- Refill the Cooling System.
Can you replace temperature sensor?
Often, the engine coolant temperature sensor must be replaced at about 100,000 miles. If you don’t properly maintain the engine cooling system, the sensor could fail much earlier. To replace the sensor, your automotive technician will unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
How do you remove a coolant temperature sender?
Unplug the single wire connector from the sender by pulling the L-shaped rubber boot straight up. Clean the area around the sender unit to prevent any contamination of the cooling system when installing the new unit. Use a clean shop rag. Unscrew and remove the coolant temperature sender using a wrench or ratchet and socket.
How to change the temperature sending switch in a Ford?
Tighten the temperature sender using the wrench or ratchet and socket. Plug the single wire connector onto the new sender unit. Attach the ground (black) cable to the battery using the wrench. Add new antifreeze to the cooling system to replace the lost coolant and tighten the radiator cap.
What to do if your temperature sensor is low?
As long as nothing is leaking out then you’re good to go. If your coolant is low pour a little distilled water in the reservoir to top it off (do NOT mix it with store bought coolant). If you do have a check engine light on you have two options now.
What should I do before replacing my coolant temperature sensor?
Make sure to clean the sensor’s insert area before you reinstall the temperature sensor. In some cases, dirt, debris, and other particles will impact the function of the coolant temperature sensor, so you want to make sure you have a clean area before installing the new one.
