How did I break the knock sensor on my Honda?
Unfortunately for me, I broke the brittle knock sensor while pulling off that side of the harness. So I ended up having to remove the entire intake manifold to replace the knock sensor too. 4 hours later though, and the car was back up and running with no more Check Engine Light. Buyer Beware!! Part did not match / fit vehicle as specified.

When detected, the ECU adjusts the ignition timing or air fuel ratio to stop the knocking. Start by putting the car on some ramps so you can get underneath. A jack and axle stands will be fine too, but I find ramps quicker for jobs where I don’t need to take the wheels off.

Why do I need a knock sensor on my engine?
Knock sensors are solely used for the purpose of sensing when your engine is “knocking,” or sensing when there is exploding in the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can also damage the engine if prolonged. When the engine “knocks” there is an excessive amount of NOx that is released.

Apparently, the OE harness that came with the older Honda V6’s had soy based materials used for the wiring. Rodents (mice, rats) love the taste of this stuff, and this is actually a VERY common issue. Common enough that Honda started selling these new harnesses that have Anti-Mouse coating on them.
