Can valve clearance affect compression?
In cases where your valves close too quickly, your engine will lose compression and begin to perform poorly. This is called clearance. Too much clearance causes a rattling sound and lackluster acceleration. Driving with too much clearance leads to less overall damage than driving with tight clearance.
How do you increase valve clearance?
Valve clearance can be increased or decreased in relation to the position of the piston. For instance, if you were change the compression ratio on an engine, you would have to cut a relief (grind a small area) of the top of the piston for each valve.
What tool do you use to measure valve clearance?
A critical tool to measuring valve clearance is a set of feeler gauges. Since the engine is going to be partially opened up and exposed, it is best to work on a clean machine.
What should the valve clearance and injector height be?
See Table “Valve Clearance and Injector Height Settings” . After engine serial number 4R37769 use a 0.5080 mm (0.020 in.) feeler gage. Check option label on valve cover for correct settings. It is normal for tune-up settings to vary, even when using the correct setting procedures.
How to measure valve lash and injector height?
Note: On engines equipped with a Jake Brake, measure valve lash and injector height before removing any brake housings. Only remove the brake housings necessary to provide access for adjustment. 1. Exhaust Valve 6. Intake Valve 2. Intake Valve 7. Fuel Injector Follower 3. Locknut 8. Valve Button 4. Adjusting Set Screw 9. Exhaust Valve 5.
How big of a clearance do you need to tighten a valve?
Tighten must be a minimum of 0.025 inch [0.64 mm] clearance. Fig.2-19. Valve spring retainer to crosshead clearance. The “VS” markets used when adjusting the injectors is also used when adjusting the valves; however, the valves to be adjusted are not on the same cylinder as the injector. See Table 2-3 for the correct valves to adjust.
Which is the correct Clynder for the injector?
You will set valves and injector as follows A will be either #1 or #6 clynder, if the push tubes or rockers for valves can not be rotated or moved, check the other clynder.
