What starts with a small oil drop on the driveway here and there can quickly escalate into a damaged starter and other problems. Most haven’t seen what an oil-soaked starter looks like, so we’ve taken some pics in our lab to show exactly how an oil leak can spread and damage the starter:
Can a head gasket leak onto a starter?
An oil leak may develop from the the right side head gasket . Oil from this type of leak will commonly drip onto the starter. Our technician tell us an updated head gasket is available to correct this concern.
Where does the oil leak in a 7.3 Powerstroke come from?
A 7.3 powerstroke oil cooler leak usually originates from the oil cooler o-rings or an oil cooler gasket. Find your oil filter and trace it to the oil cooler assembly. Check for leaks around the ends where the oil cooler attaches to the engine or at the o-rings in the center of the cooler.
What causes an oil leak in a 7.3 IDI?
This goes for any idi engine be it 6.9 or 7.3. It can ONLY drain down the passenger side of the engine over the starter. Fuel leaking from a return line will mix with oil or dirt and then it appears to be an oil leak when its just a fuel leak. Hard to be sure.

How long can an oil soaked starter last?
