Are military hops still available?
Military hops are only available at certain bases and you never know where available planes may be going or how many seats will be available. I consider the ability to fly for free on military flights to be one of the best benefits for military families.
Is space a travel still available?
As many in the military community know, Space-A has been restricted due to COVID-19 since March 2020, and as of this writing, it is still only an option for active duty on emergency leave and a few other specific cases. All other travelers require an Exception to Policy letter from an O-6 or higher.
Can civilians take military hops?
DoD civilian employees must be in a leave or nonduty (i.e., weekend or holiday) status to register for space-available travel. Those members in appellate leave status are not authorized space-available travel privileges. Space available passengers travel only after all duty cargo and passengers have been accommodated.

How does military Space available flights work?
Space-available flights, a.k.a “MAC flights” or “military hops,” are military operational flights that have extra seats.
