Why is my transmission leaking from the drive shaft?
Generally, transmission fluid leaks occur when the seals in your drive shaft have become loose. When your seals start leaking, they will usually need to be replaced. You can tell that your transmission fluid is too low if your vehicle is shifting slower than normal or if you’re experiencing frequent gear slippage.
What fluid is in the driveshaft?
Every front or rear axle is filled with a special oil (also called differential fluid, or gear oil) that takes care of this. The differential fluid lubricates the gears, bearings and other internal parts, and provides cooling to these components as well.
How far should slip yoke go into transmission?
¾”
The slip yoke should have ¾” before it would fully bottom out on the transmission output. Trucks and offroad vehicles with the outboard slip yoke may require more if they have extra suspension travel.
What causes slip yoke clunk?
A binding of the slip yoke on the transmission tail shaft can produce a “clunk” sound on these vehi- cles. When vehicle movement is begun, the slip yoke can pop forward releasing built up tension and causing a “clunk” noise in the drive line. This noise may be mis-diagnosed as a universal joint or spring problem.
How do you fix a transmission leak?
Changing the transmission pan gasket is probably the easiest leak to fix. Assuming that you’ve already removed the pan and drained the fluid, you just need to clean off the remnants old gasket, and install the new one. It’s also a good idea to install a new transmission filter while you’re at it.
How much does it cost to replace a transfer case seal?
Transfer Case Output Shaft Oil Seal Replacement Cost – RepairPal Estimate. Labor costs are estimated between $159 and $200 while parts are priced at $49. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific vehicle or unique location. Related repairs may also be needed.
Is differential fluid the same as transmission fluid?
Differentials use gear oil/fluid. A manual transmission also uses gear oil but the viscosity may be a bit different. In an automatic transmission, definitely not; the fluid is much thinner and is called ATF – automatic transmission fluid.
What causes a GM transmission yoke to leak?
Some GM transmission yokes, primarily those used on trucks, have a weep hole that relieves pressure buildup caused by the yoke moving back an forth as the vehicle passes over bumps and other road irregularities. If the trans in your truck leaks fluid when the vehicle is parked uphill, fluid may be coming out of the weep hole
What to do if your drive yoke is leaking?
The rest is the reverse of removal. To help from ruining another O-ring, use a little tranny fluid on the outside of the yoke before sliding it back into the transmission. This will also help save the rear seal from damage. Home
Where is the leak in the transmission shaft?
Photo # 1 shows the yoke plug. Our inspection discovered the plug that seals the end of the yoke had a small rust hole from the inside out. As the fluid traveled down the output shaft and yoke splines it leaked through the holes in this plug.
What causes a trans in a truck to leak?
If the trans in your truck leaks fluid when the vehicle is parked uphill, fluid may be coming out of the weep hole due to failure of an output shaft O-ring. If your truck has this weep hole (arrow in photo below), you will be able to see it with the driveshaft removed by flipping the yoke to the side.
