Why does my Harley Davidson engine pop when I idle?

After coming to a stop, the idle is a bit rough and sometimes the engine acts like it wants to cut out for a few seconds after which it seems to idle OK. The popping/backfire also continues about the same on decel as when I got it.

Nothing outragous but just one time it will barely be idling high enoug to keep running and then the next time I ride will be idling a bit high. It seams whichever it is doing, high or low, it does it everytime I idle until I shut it off and then the next time I start it up the idel will be a different level for the entire trip.
