Why does my GM Truck make a grinding noise?
Original front end. Today, almost all the way to work (20 miles) started to get a faint grinding from the front end. When I got to work, looked for obvious stuff stuck to the axle, but nothing. Going home, it was quiet at first, but after 20 miles, same noise. The noise is almost like that of the 4wd being engaged on dry pavement.
Is there a grinding sound in the front?

Ever since I’ve bought my truck (05 silverado crew z-71 65,000 miles on it), whenever I put it in 4 high, there’s a definite grinding/growling noise coming from the transfer case and/or front differential. Not when cornering, just going straight down a road, snow or no snow, doesn’t make a difference, it’s there.

You may just need to pump a little grease into the boot & squeeze it into the joint to stop it if it isn’t too far gone. The fact that the noise is worse on a tight turn just solidifies the outer CV joint as being the problem. You should grease the other 3 while you’re at it.

The dealer won’t even take it because they know the problem that they are dealing with. Started the motor in the morning noticed a light ticking noise come from the motor. Sounds like the lifters are tapping. The noise use to only be in the morning but now it is constant.

The front hubs arent really a hub anymore the CV axle simply is splined into the bearing so power can be spent to the Front wells. This allowed for ease of use and less parts to screw up. So id lean twards something being messed up in the front other than the hub if ou dont haver the hum. Interesting, thanks for your help Murdog.
