The rpm’s will drop to 500-800, engine will shake, and either stall out or surge up to 1300 rpm’s before going back down to 1000. When the rpm’s are low if I press the gas nothing happens or the car stalls out immediately. This only happens once it is warmed up.
Can a car stall with a bad throttle position sensor?
The engine can stall for no reason and without any warning. This happens when the TPS gives incorrect information to the ECM. The engine can stall at high speed, at low speed, or even at idle. A faulty throttle position sensor will not let your car accelerate normally. Though this doesn’t happen all the time.
What causes a car to stall at idle?
Once the engine is warmed up to near the half mark on the temp gauge in the dash the car will stall or try to stall if idling for one minute to five minutes. The rpm’s will drop to 500-800, engine will shake, and either stall out or surge up to 1300 rpm’s before going back down to 1000.
What happens when engine heats up to operating temp?
As the engine heats up the ring-cylinder mate becomes looser so that the engine will run smoother and easier…but if there is too much wear the combustion gases will begin to blow by the ring-cylinder surfaces and will cause each stroke to lose power.
Well, there is an ignition problem that can cause this when the engine gets hot and it stalls. It’s caused by a lack of spark which can be either the ECU’s fault (on EFI cars), or the coil on pretty much any car. Heat causes expansion. The ECU or the coil gets hot and expands.

The first is that by limiting the amount of torque when you push the gas pedal for a second or two, engine life is increased by reducing the stress on it during takeoff. The second is improved fuel economy. Here’s a great article on diagnosing a bad throttle position sensor from cars direct.
