Why does my car grind when I shift into third?

Why does my car grind when I shift into third?

As the gear shift is made, a collar slides over the end of the gear. When you hear a grinding sound, this happens because that collar that is colliding with the end of the gear is spinning at a slower or faster rate compared to the shaft in your transmission.

Why is my 4th gear grinding?

Yeah, grinding is a symptom of two possible things. Sychros going out, or the clutch not releasing completely. If it’s easy to get into all gears but one, that leads you to the synchro for that gear being worn out.

Why does my car make a grinding noise when I shift gears?

Grinding, rumbling, buzzing, hissing and clunking are all quite easy sounds for drivers to tell apart, but this is one in particular to watch out for – a grinding or ‘crunching’ noise when you shift gears. If you find that’s happening, it’s likely to be a problem with your synchromesh cones, or synchronisers.

Which basically means skipping gears and not to change down through each gear (5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st). You can block gear change from 4th to 1st for example. It’s also possible to ‘block’ gear change up if you have enough speed for that gear.

Why does my Audi TT make grinding noise when I Shift?

This only happens when shifting into 3rd gear (on a 7 gear Audi TT). If I shift when the RPMs are high (say over 2k) then there will be a horrible grinding noise. Instead I have to apply the clutch, wait until the RPMs come down and then shift. This problem has gotten increasingly worse over time.

Is there a point in trying to change gears fast?

There’s no point in trying to change gears as fast as possible (even on a race track, the gain is minimal) but it’s very hard on the box. I second Timo’s assessment: it’s likely that the synchromesh gear (AKA synchro) is worn badly enough that it’s not able to do it’s standard rev matching for you.

When to put 3rd Gentilly in the car?

Then eased and was only grinding when being put into 3rd, (while working up and down the gears). Like you guys mentioned matching revs and putting into 3rd gentilly worked well but it’s difficult to do depending on your speed, ie in a national speed limit zone compared to driving around town.
