Why do my RPMs jump when I shift?
The jump in revs is due to the Idle Air Controler and the ECU. Or in the STI the the drive by wire and the ecu. There is aditional air introduced into the motor on overrun as well as the injectors are shut off to allow for low emissions.
What happens if u shift at high RPMs?
Nope it is not harmful at all. It doesn’t matter even if you shift at 1500–3000 rpm range or even 7k+ rpm. The only thing that will matter is the time the clutch is being engaged. If it’s more definately it’ll wear out quickly.
What causes a car to shift at high RPM?
In automatic vehicles, transmission fluid is used to carry power from the engine to the transmission. If the transmission fluid begins to leak, your car will start to rev to higher levels (due to torque converter or gearbox band slippage). This may be accompanied by delayed or erratic gear shifts.
Is shifting at 5000 RPM bad?
5000 is where the fun starts. It’s not staying there for extended periods. You’ll be fine. The reason it’s so sluggish is that the transmission is programmed to save fuel so it’s always in a higher gear.
How high is too high for RPM?
Typically, engines idle at about 600-800 rpm. Older engines may go up to 1200 rpm or more while warming up. But if the engine is revving up while idling, even after it’s sufficiently warmed up, you might have a problem. High idle speeds waste fuel, cause extra wear and tear on your engine, and can be unsafe as well.

Why does my Toyota Celica have a high idle speed?
3 people found this helpful. Toyota’s also have a high idle (usually around 2K rpm) for a few moments after start up then it dies down to normal idle. Colder it is the longer the idle holds up. Now if it is super warm and it is idling high all the time then there is another issue most likely related to the above post.
Why is my car running at a higher RPM?
And in modern cars, if you are running several accessories, such as the air conditioner or heater, the engine’s onboard computer may be telling it to run at a higher RPM to provide the necessary power. But if the accelerated idle persists even after the engine is fully warmed up, it probably indicates a genuine problem.

When does the RPM go back to normal?
The RPM will usually go back to normal as you accelerate the vehicle, but will increase again after you stop. This is definitely not a normal situation. If you are experiencing a rough idle or your RPM is running high, then there are a variety of reasons for why this could be happening.
