The self adjuster in the rear drums you are speaking of did not adjust very well at all. Even when you backed up to adjust them, you wouldn’t slam on the brakes but instead, pump them.

Backing up and braking could cause the self adjuster to tighten, and going the same direction (backing up to the left for example) would only apply wear to the opposite side eventually causing tightness.

You can only turn it off. The sensitivity is for the rear park sense which is also part of the system. Mine has surprised me a couple times, once it was picking up bushes behind / to the side of me and once while I was backing up next to a sand dune, once again, it was to the side of me.

UPDATE (4/28/2014) So after the 4/9/2014 update where I thought the problem had stopped, it started happening again and the brakes would be locked up when trying to back the car up. There wasn’t anything wrong with the front wheel after all. The problem was in the rear passenger side drum brakes. James’ answer (below) was exactly right.
