Why do my brake lights not light up?
My brake lights do not light up until I have pushed the pedal down by about 1cm. If I rest my foot on the brake pedal, with the brakes applied a little bit then the brake lights do not light up until I push down further. This is obviously a safety issue. What can I do to fix this? Is it an easy fix?
What happens when you put your foot on the brake?
Repeated pushes on the brake pedal without the vehicle actually starting builds pressure on the brake lines. The result is that the brake pedal now cannot be pushed down any longer, as least not easily. Further, the pedal now will not engage the switch behind that tells the car you are stepping on the brake.
When does the parking brake light come on?
If you still have your doubts, drive the car a few miles and place your hand near the center of the rear wheel. If you feel allot of heat, odds are the parking brake is hanging up or you have another issue on that wheel needing attention. Also this light should come on when the cars starts and go quickly.

Why does the brake pedal push back on my foot?
Every time I try to apply the brakes it works then the pedal pushes back on my foot. have the same problem? Very common. What is happening is that the ABS is activating and pushing back. The fix is not real hard but it can be a PIA if you are in the rust belt.
Do you have to start the car to see the brake lights?
There is no need to start the car for this. In fact, the brake lights might be receiving power regardless of whether the car is on or off, so this step may not apply. Use a torch (a head-mounted lamp works great here) to see the business end of the brake pedal.
