Why did they get rid of the BCS?
Most years, the B.C.S. matched the top two teams in the Associated Press poll in the championship game. The cause of death included several factors: lower television ratings for bowl games, undesirable matchups, the Fiesta Bowl scandal and the title game rematch in 2012 between Alabama and Louisiana State.
What replaced the BCS?
In the 2014 season, the BCS was discontinued and replaced by the College Football Playoff, which organizes a four-team playoff and national championship game.
How does the BCS work?
The BCS takes the number of points for each team, and divides them by 1450, which is the number of points a team would have if they were ranked #1 on all the ballots. The process is the same as the Coaches Poll, except the number of points in the Harris Poll for each team are divided by 2850.
Why the BCS is better than a playoff?
The BCS rankings are designed to favor consistency over the course of the entire season. It rewards teams that beat the opponents they are supposed to beat as well as underdogs that upset higher-ranked teams. Under a playoff system, a team could lose an entire season’s worth of hard work by having one bad day.
