Where does the heat go in a Harley Davidson engine?
The engine transfers heat to the oil, which then goes through the oil cooler. The cooled oil now goes back into the engine to cool it, and the cycle repeats. Oil-cooling allowed Harley-Davidson to continue using the air-cooled Big Twin engine on its bikes.
Are there any Harley Davidsons that do not overheat?
The dual cooling bikes are not so prone to overheating as the regular air-cooled models. Harley-Davidson and Ducati have taken steps to phase out air-cooling on their models. Liquid cooling was introduced on Harleys in 2014, and more models are getting liquid-cooled engines.
Why does my Harley Davidson engine run OK?
Soemtines you see engine appearing to run OK until the fuel level in teh tank drops below where the hole in the line is. This is because fuel in front of a hole provides just a bit of resistance to the pressure leak. On borderline systems, it might be enough to allow the engine to run.
What to do if your Harley doesn’t start?
If holes in hose then pressure would leak off quickly and not start, but if hose is good, engine would at least start (I would think) then sputter and quit. If no start as in this case, I’d pull the pump and visually inspect before ordering parts. Seems Post 21 in link given by Jack has part numbers.

Are there any problems with a Harley Davidson Sportster?
From 1999 to 2006, Harley’s V-Twin engine faced a high rate of malfunctions. According to Law Abiding Rider, V-Twins had a Twin Cam chain tensioner problem during these years and the 2001 Sportster 883 was the lowlight of these productions. The Sportster faced problems in the past, as well.
What causes a Harley Davidson not to start?
Some other ideas: 1 Problem with security module or key FOB 2 Problem with clutch safety switch, or its wiring (if bike has it) 3 Bad relay (like you said)
Why is the RPM on my Harley Davidson so high?
(Could be you went through 50 key cycles with no engine issues) When you get off the interstate & the idle is high,,, if you were to power it off and restart the bike, does the idle calm down or does it resume the high idle. Would help to know how high the RPM was, but you have no tach. (?)
What happens when the Idle is high on a Harley Davidson?
Strange that there are no historical codes since you did say you saw the check engine light come on. (Could be you went through 50 key cycles with no engine issues) When you get off the interstate & the idle is high,,, if you were to power it off and restart the bike, does the idle calm down or does it resume the high idle.
Is it normal for a Harley Davidson engine to be hot?
He said that Sportsters run hot and also EPA fuel regulations keep the bike running lean even with my remap from V&H. I guess I could get another map to increase fuel to make the bike run a little cooler., but as far as the dealer and Harley are concerned my engine temps are normal
What makes a Harley Davidson overheat in traffic?
Harley is an air cooled and oil cooled engine. Slow moving your bike and stand-stills will ruin a good engine. The traveling at idle speeds in stop-n-go traffic is not the way the harley is designed and nothing short of a 20 mile an hour breeze would improve that situation much. HEAT is the killer of the air-cooled engine.
What should the oil temp be on a Harley Davidson?
This weekend there was an old hot rod show in town, hotrods and harleys (mostly) cruising up an down the blvd. Engine got extremely hot, oil temp was almost at 300 degrees ( normally runs around 200) before I pulled over and shut the bike down for awhile.
When to shut down a Harley Davidson engine?
When my front engine cylinder hits that number the engine is overheating. I need to get the bike moving soon. If I can’t, I need to shut it down especially if the entire engine/trans/primary is cooking. Once those parts are at the same temperature as the engine case, they can no longer sink heat and a point of equilibrium is reached..
