When does a KA24DE make a rattling noise?
My KA has recently developed what I can best describe as a rattling noise between about 2000 and 3000 RPM. The noise is most apparent with the engine under load (climbing hills, hard acceleration), but it is still there if the engine is revved in neutral, just not quite as loud. If the engine is held at around 2500, the noise remains.
What sounds like noisy tappets but isn’t?
When used for longer journeys it begins to make a noise quite like tappets that don’t have any oil. It’s perhaps a bit quieter though. It happens while the engine is running, and when the car is stopped. The peculiar bit is the noise isn’t in time with the engine revolutions, and does not get faster when revved.

Hanah Kim. The base line is that Hydraulic tappets/followers that are not filled with oil will make a noise that does more damage to your ears than the engine parts, subject to the noise being due to blockage of the oil hole in the tappet and not a general lack of upper lubrication.
Why is my KA24DE making a piston slap noise?
Rod knock is usually that, a loud dull knock and not a higher pitch tap like yours. It cannot be cured and gets progressively worse until the bearing fails. Lots of fresh oil and easy driving can extend this time but best to head home. Piston slap usually occurs when engine is cold and goes away quickly as it warms.

What to do if tappets are not working?
1 Firstly, an oil and filter change with the correct grade of oil can clear the oil ways and restore the compression to the hydraulic tappets if they are not 2 Identify and replace any offending hydraulic tappet (s). 3 If the engine is ticking then replacing all 16 tappets (lifters) and rockers arms will rectify the situation.
