I would have to see if it was making boost and remove the intake to check the shaft play, but the noise and location is consistent with the sound of an oil starved turbo or bad bearings. How difficult of a job is this? Can it be done all from the top? I couldn’t find any video’s on turbo replacement or downpipe replacement to get a good idea.
