What tools do I need to replace my brakes?
Tools Required
- Disposable mechanic’s gloves to protect your hands and keep them clean.
- Jack and jack stands.
- Lug wrench.
- C-clamp or length of wood to retract the piston.
- Wrench (choose a socket, open end or adjustable wrench)
- Turkey baster for drawing out brake fluid.
- Plastic tie, bungee cord or piece of string.
Can you replace just brake pads?
You can replace your brake pads in pairs (the front or the rear) at the same time or separately. If your front brake pads are in need of repair or replacement, your mechanic can fix this issue independently. It’s also important to note that your front and rear brake pads wear at very different rates.
How to replace the front brake pads on a VW Jetta?
Once the dust caps have been removed, you’ll be able to access the 7mm hex head or “Allen Key” dual purpose caliper bolts and guide pins. Loosen the upper and lower caliper bolts/pins by turning them clockwise (as seen from the outside of the vehicle) with a 7mm hex head socket or an Allen Key wrench.

Where is the bleeder valve on a VW Jetta?
The brake fluid bleeder valve is located underneath a rubber cap on the back side of the caliper near the upper caliper bolt. Replace the front wheel and spin on the five lug bolts in the clockwise direction by hand to prevent them from becoming cross threaded.
