What to look for in a 2003 BMW R1150GS?
May be looking at a low mileage 2003 r1150gs and never had a BMW and curious what were some of the issues that came up. Why does MY BMW R1150GS not start properly?
3rd issue ….. front wheel. This issue is based on the feeling of some kind of unbalance on the front wheel, when turning the handlebar and at low speeds. Say for example I’m turning the handlebar 30 degrees , it feels like there’s some kind of an external pressure on the turn which makes the handlebar turn bit more.

If there is play at the rear wheel of an 1150 boxer the key is to see if it is pivot bearings, a simple adjustment or reasonably priced replacement, and not the Final Drive bearing, a much more involved and potentially expensive repair. I had play in my pivot bearings and did an adjustment and greasing and no problem since.

Where does the battery go on a BMW R1150R?
My R1150R (2003 model) does not. But, there is a large lug on the back of the starter solenoid which goes straight to the battery. This is where the later model “hot lugs” were attached. With the starter cover removed this is a readily accessible connection and the battery can be charged connecting here.

One point in the year you are looking at is the ABS system. At some point around 2003-2004 the ABS system went to the servo system. There are particular things to know before getting a servo bike. Some really like that break system, others not so much.

I jumped on the 2000 1150GS model I found, after lurking here and figuring it this way. The 1100 had been around for years and there were known issues, some even recognized by BMW. So the 2000 1150 was really just a factory upgrade of the 1100.

More displacement, structurally sound and still self serviceable. I don’t care for the added complexity of the servo brakes and twin spark ignition.
Why are the Dual plugs on a BMW 1150?
Many have the opinion that the dual plugs were implemented to ‘fix’ surging. BMW never claimed that. And it hasn’t. The secondary plugs help combustion and on the hexheads it helps with pinging and engine knocking. Surging can be minimized by careful tweaking of all engine adjustments.
