I have found that the Other bikes I have been on (like you),, Can’t be compared to a 1200 sport. They are ALL, MUCH smoother and do not present the 1200 problem in take-off and clutch work…

Where is the lock plate on a Sportster clutch?
Be aware that a spring loaded lock plate rests in an indent behind the cover and sits lightly on the adjusting screw. After the cover has been removed, gently remove the adjusting screw lock plate. Grabbing the adjustment screw between two fingers, any play in the clutch pack can be felt by pushing and pulling against the screw.

Why did my Sportster clutch go out of warranty?
So, the shop got in there and gave me a phone call. Those spring plates or rivets people have mentioned, broke inside and tore up everything.. The bearing is shot, plates gone,etc! So, I went from a simple job, to having to replace my whole clutch and out of warranty!
