Dexron VI replaced Dexron II and III, and can be used in General Motors domestically built or import transmissions that specified Dexron II or Dexron III. Dexron VI is a low viscosity transmission fluid and should also be used with the full synthetic low viscosity transmission fluid.
What’s the difference between DEXRON and DEXRON 3?
Dexron 3 is an improved version of Dexron 2. = greater resistance to degradation, oxidation, and thermal stability. In addition in my experience it performs slightly better on cold start up.
Can you mix DEXRON II and DEXRON III?
Yes, you can mix them together, as long as you peel one of the “I”s off of the Dextron III bottle before pouring it in…on second thought…you probably don’t even need to do that. They can be safely mixed.
Is Dexron 3 the same as ATF 4?
Dexron IV was an upgraded version of Dexron III, which was used by GM only briefly. GM considers Dexron VI to be “backward compatible,” meaning GM recommends it for use in any vehicle that originally used any earlier version of Dexron and that it can be mixed with them.
What is the difference between Dexron III and Mercon V?
Dexron III and Mercon a basically the same spec. Mercon V, however, is slightly thicker and has a different friction additive. The owners manual and the trans dipstick tell the proper choice.
