What is Dienogest tablet used for?
This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: dienogest (a progestin) and estradiol valerate (an estrogen). It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle.
What are the side effects of Visanne?

Does dienogest affect estrogen?
Dienogest has progestogenic activity, possibly some antiprogestogenic activity, and has antiandrogenic activity. The medication does not interact with the estrogen receptor, the glucocorticoid receptor, or the mineralocorticoid receptor, and hence has no estrogenic, glucocorticoid, or antimineralocorticoid activity.
How long can you take dienogest?
Dienogest at a dose of 2 mg daily has been studied extensively in clinical trial programs performed in Europe and Japan, including two studies with treatment durations of up to 65 weeks. These studies demonstrated that dienogest has an efficacy, safety, and tolerability profile that is favorable for long-term use.
What are the effects of progestin?
Along with their needed effects, progestins used in high doses sometimes cause some unwanted effects such as blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes, or problems of the liver and eyes. Although these effects are rare, some of them can be very serious and cause death.
What happens when progesterone levels are high?
The increase in progesterone as your body prepares for fertilization is linked to symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome or PMS, including: Breast swelling. Breast tenderness. Bloating.
Can I get pregnant on Visanne?
Visanne inhibits ovulation in the majority of women and thus pregnancy is very unlikely. However, a few cases have been reported. If pregnancy occurs it is more likely to be an ectopic pregnancy. Visanne should be stopped prior to pregnancy and not used during pregnancy.
How long can you stay on Visanne?
Tablets must be taken throughout 28 days without regard for bleeding. When a pack is finished the next one should be started without interruption. The efficacy of VISANNE may be reduced in the event of missed tablets, vomiting, and/ or d iarrhoea (if occurring within 3 to 4 hours after tablet taking).
