What is beer potomania?
The syndrome “beer potomania” is used to describe a patient who presents with hyponatremia in conjunction with low daily solute intake and excessive beer drinking. This pathophysiological state results in patients at serious risk of rapid correction of hyponatremia and its neurological sequelae.
How do you fix beer potomania?
Management Recommendations for Hyponatremia Caused by Beer Potomania
- Nothing by mouth except medications for 24 hours.
- No intravenous fluids unless symptomatic.
- Prescribe intravenous fluids in finite amounts if needed.
- Intensive care status.
- Check serum sodium every 2 hours.
- Goals.
- Reduce serum sodium levels if necessary.
How does beer potomania work?
Beer potomania is a syndrome of hyponatremia associated with excessive beer drinking. Little or no salt content of beer results in marked reduction in the solute load to the kidney. This leads to impaired water clearance and dilutional hyponatremia.
What causes Potomania?
Beer potomania is caused by excessive drinking together with a poor diet. You can prevent beer potomania by eating healthy nutritious meals and reducing or avoiding alcohol intake. The number of calories you should eat in a day depends on your age, sex, lifestyle, and daily levels of physical activity.
Does beer potomania cause Siadh?
Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH) and cerebral salt wasting syndrome were unlikely with low urine sodium and low urine osmolality. The initial rapid correction of hyponatremia with low serum uric acid level suggests that hyponatremia was contributed by both hypovolemic hyponatremia and beer potomania.
Why is it called Potomania?
The word “potomania” comes from “poto,” which means “to drink,” and “mania,” which means “too much.” Potomania causes a condition called hyponatremia, which is a lack of sodium in your blood. Your body normally maintains a balance between sodium and water levels.
Why does beer Potomania cause hyponatremia?
The low solute content of beer, and suppressive effect of alcohol on proteolysis result in reduced solute delivery to the kidney. The presence of inadequate solute in the kidney eventually causes dilutional hyponatremia secondary to reduced clearance of excess fluid from the body.
What is urine sodium in beer potomania?
Beer potomania usually manifests as altered mental status, weakness, and gait disturbance with an average serum sodium concentration of 108 mEq/L. Other abnormal lab results consistent with this diagnosis include hypokalemia (mean potassium, 3 mEq/L) and low blood urea nitrogen and urine sodium levels.
