What is a wheel axle nut?
Axle nuts are pieces of hardware that are used to help secure a wheel to an axle. Axle nuts are pieces of hardware that are used to help secure a wheel to an axle. On the other side, a lever can be pivoted to either tighten or loosen the skewer, thereby securing the wheel or loosening it for removal.
When to loosen the nut on a fork?
If Working without an Axle Holding Tool, Always Loosen The Axle Pinch Bolts Immediately After Tightening of the Axle Nut.
How do you install a front wheel fork?
Once the wheel bearings are inspected, apply a light coating of grease to the external area of any external wheel bearing spacers where they contact the outer wheel hub seals, then apply a light coating of the same grease to the front axle and install the front wheel and axle to the forks as detailed in our article on Installing the Front Wheel.
Where do you put the 15qr axle in a fork?
Insert the 15QR axle into the right side of the fork dropout and slide it all the way through the hub, until you contact the axle nut on the other side (see Figure 1: Inserting the Wheel into the Fork Dropouts and Figure 2: Inserting the 15QR Axle ).
How do you adjust the 15qr axle nut?
With the 15QR lever in the OPEN position, push the 15QR axle in from the lever side of the fork. With this action, the axle nut keeper will be pushed out of its splined recess. Rotate the nut keeper out of the way, while continuing to push on the 15QR axle (see Figure 10: Adjusting the Axle Nut ).
What to do if your front axle nut is not torqued?
If an axle nut was not correctly torqued, it could be a major safety issue. This axle requires that you have a 19mm allen bit. To torque, or check axle nut torque, use a 6mm allen to loosen the pinch bolt in the right side lower slider. Then, use the 19mm allen with your foot pounds torque wrench and tighten the axle 59 to 79 foot pounds.
Can You Torque the left side of the front wheel?
After you have torqued the left side pinch bolts you can fully torque the axle nut. At this point, the front wheel, axle, nut, and collars have been tightened to the left fork leg and the right fork leg is loose and able to float on the axle. The final rule is to align the right fork leg.
Can you install a front wheel by hand?
You should be able to install your axle by hand or with the light tap of a soft mallet. The next rule is to tighten the axle nut before you tighten the axle pinch bolts.
How big are the pinch bolts on a front wheel?
After you have tightened the axle nut you can torque the left side axle pinch bolts to spec, usually 12-16 ft-lbs. You should tighten them gradually and evenly. If these bolts are over tightened they can distort the axle lug out of round and cause the axle to bind in the future.
