What is a doohickey on a Kawasaki KLR 650?
Both generations of the Kawasaki KLR 650 have had a serious issue with the counter-balancing chain adjustment mechanism, or as most call it, a “doohickey”. Basically the doohickey tensions the counter-balancing chain and this helps neutralize engine shake and vibration, which makes for a smoother running engine.
How many miles will a Kawasaki KLR 650 last?
Ridden in a sane fashion, the KLR should last for 50k at least, before needing rebore or valve work (other than adjustments.)
What happens if the doohickey fails?
Generally a doohickey failure will not result in a toasted engine, but it has happened. It’s a loose chunk of metal inside the engine. They seem to be welded together by the same guy that does the shift levers, so it’s well worth the peace of mind to replace it.

The “dohickey” failed on my KLR. Not sure exactly when. I decieded to upgrade mine for the peace of mind, heck I only had about 5k miles on the bike. I had already done the adjustment twice, you know loosen the bolt and let it self adjust.

I bought my A9 KLR with 1900 miles on it, the shift lever broke before I hit 4,000 miles or so. You can either have the stock unit re-welded, or get one of the various aftermarket one sold by Dual-Star, Happy-Trails, Arrowhead, etc. (check the FAQ for links).
