What ensures timing chain has correct tension?
The tensioner ensures the correct and necessary tension of the timing chain that surrounds the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprocket. It exerts full control, making the chain run smoothly, preventing it from rattling and coming off the sprockets.
Should there be any slack in a timing chain?
A worn timing chain won’t cause a miss not until it’s so worn it jumps a tooth (and then you’ve got a lot more problems than a miss *LOL*). The engine always rotates the same way, so the slack is always “taken up” when the engine is running (the slack will all be on one side all the time).
What causes timing chain to jump on Mazda 2.3?
IIRC on the 2.3 there is no keyway to keep the crank gear and balancer aligned. If the engine is spinning and has compression you probably spun the balancer and it’s out of time. Set piston 1 at TDC and line the balancer up as indicated.
How to line up a harmonic balancer on a Mazda 3?
When you have the crank locked and the cams locked, there is a hole that you can use to line up the balancer in the proper position. If it’s aligned you should be able to insert an m6 bolt (probably need 20mm or above in length) into the hole and lock it while you tighten down the crank pulley.
What should I do if my timing chain jumped?
Try realigning the timing, using the procedure I did if possible: turn the engine until all pistons are centered or at least not at the top of their cylinders, then adjust the crankshaft to match, so that you don’t have to worry about getting into an intermediate configuration where the pistons hit the valves.
Where is the pulley on a Mazda 3?
The design has a pulley outside of the timing cover and a cogged gear inside of the timing cover on the end of the crank shaft. The cogged gear is never replaced unless there is a problem with it, it is pressed onto the end of the crank and you would need a gear puller to remove it.
How to install timing gear on Mazda B2600?
Tighten the bolts to 69-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm). Move the adjuster sleeve towards the left and install a pin to hold it in place. Install the timing gear sprocket and chain. With the timing mark on the sprocket at the 6 o’clock position, the white links on the chain should be on either side of the mark.
How to tighten the chain on a Mazda B2600?
Tighten Bottom (B) chain guide securely. Adjust the position of the Top (B) chain guide, after shaking the right and left sprockets to collect any chain slack, so that when the chain is moved toward the center, the clearance between the chain guide anmd the chain links will be approximately 3.5mm (0.13779 inch).

What should I do if my timing chain broke?
If the chain broke the actual damage might be minimal. Depends on how expensive a new chain is, but it could be worth it to just replace the chain, re-align and see how the engine runs. Doing an (2nd hand) engine replacement will still be available as a last resort.
