How do you calculate heat tape?
Heat Tape Calculator
- Measure the linear feet of roof eave (A) that you want to protect.
- Measure the depth of the eave (B)
- Note any valleys in the roof (C) that exist where the heat cable will be installed.
- If there are gutters, make note of the number of downspouts.
- Observe the distance to the nearest outlet.
How much does heat tape cost?
Typical heat tape burns electricity at six to nine watts per foot per hour. That means each 100 feet of heat tape operating 24/7 can translate to an added monthly cost of $41 to $62 to operate heat tape, says Eileen Wysocki, energy auditor for Holy Cross Energy.
Can heat tape start a fire?
Sadly, heat tape has the potential to cause fires in homes and businesses. Many of these products consist only of non-regulating tape which plugs into a wall outlet. If the heat tape remains activated for long periods of time – especially if temperatures rise and/or the tape is well-insulated – it can spark a fire.
Can you throw salt on your roof?
A Do not put salt on your roof! Sodium chloride, or rock salt, is highly corrosive. It will damage the roofing, siding, gutters and downspouts, and the poisonous runoff will kill foundation plants and more. (Calcium chloride and corn-based formulas are preferred, but they still may damage your home and lawn.)
Can pipes freeze with heat tape?
In sub-freezing areas, heat tape is one of the most popular ways to protect pipes from freezing because it’s affordable and works remarkably well. Heat tape isn’t sticky. It’s really just a simple resistive heat-conducting flexible wire that uses electricity to produce heat.
