What does 5w40 mean in engine oil?
5w40 motor oil has a winter viscosity grade of five, meaning it’s less viscous at very low temperatures, compared to, say, 10w40. It has a hot viscosity grade of 40, which means it is just as viscous as 10w40 at high temperatures but less viscous than oils such as 15w50.
Should I put a magnet in my oil pan?
Registered. A magnet is not a bad idea but it does not need to be super strong. Engines can flake off things that would then get stuck in the oil pickup tube screen. In the past when we had steel blocks, heads the magnet could catch this stuff.
Is 5w30 or 5W40 thicker?
Both 5w30 and 5w40 are motor oil but they have different viscosity. 5w30 works smoothly on the engine as it is thicker. On the other hand, 5w40 is not that much thicker. 5w40 has a higher viscosity rate as compare to 5w30.
Does putting a magnet on your oil filter help?
As the motor oil runs through the filter, the magnets pull all the metal particles out of the oil. This is a great solution because it prevents the shavings from running through the motor again. Magnets are the only technology that can “catch” small metallic particles in oil. Every filter should have them.
Are oil filter magnets worth it?
An Oil Filter Magnet Helps Keep The Filter Media Unclogged This is a great benefit if you’re using cheap disposable filters that clog up fast. Oil filters can catch some of the larger metal particles in the oil. It will cause the filters to clog up faster.
What’s the difference between synthetic 15W 40 and 5W 40?
It used to be that in that if you ran conventional you ran 15w-40 and if you ran synthetic then there was no 15w-40, so you ran 5w-40.
Do you need to change the oil on a 15w40?
With an OCI of 6 months and 2k miles and living in temperatures above 60 °F, i don’t see the reason to change on an engine that is working great with conventional oil for the past 26 years. But if we had the 15W40 synthetic (not avaible here yet) i would love to try it out, especially if the price was similar.
Why do I use 5W-40 oil in my tractor?
I use 5W-40 in my tractor because I change oil once a year and I want the cold pumping in the winter if there is a cold spell and the temps drop well below freezing and I need to clear the road or something..
What kind of oil is used in GTI 155?
My Owners Manual (2011 GTI 155 LTD) says to use XPS synthetic blend oil, or 5w-40 or 10w-40 with API service level SM, SL, or SJ. I did a search in this sub-forum for “oil” and found 0 topics. Doing some research on oils, the API seems easy, since virtually all oils are up to service level SN, today.

Which is better a 5w40 or a 15w40?
I can get a 5W40 SN A3/B4, 229.5, A40 for the same price of the conventional 15W40 SL E7, 228.3, that i’m using on my 94 engine. The only reason why i am still using the HDEO is that i think the higher HTHS and base oil viscosity will give me better oil pressure and protection.
