What are the wires on the ignition switch?
In the start position, the yellow and brown wires were open: feeding the orange wire to the starter relay (“start”) and the pink wire to the ignition system (“ignition 2” bypassing the ballast resistor). Fine. In the run position, the blue wire was open and the black wire was open but with some resistance showing.
Why does the ignition switch not follow the diagram?
The plug-in connector at the bottom of the steering column is gone and stuff was just crimped together sloppily. It doesn’t seem to follow the wiring diagram, and what really has me scratching my head is that the colors and gauges of the wires running from the ignition switch are not at all what the FSM wiring diagram shows.
Can You solder a steering column ignition switch?
Yes, you can solder fusable link. Just heat the connection just long enough to make your solder connection…. Thanks…strange about the NOS photo, though, this was on ebay and the guy listed it as compatible with 73-74 Dodge pickup steering column ignition switch.
How does an ignition switch work without a key?
Most ignition switches will only have two wires going into it. On wire is sending power in, and the other wire sends power to the electrical box if the key is inserted. Telling the machine that it’s ok to start.
What did the orginal style ignition switch do?
The orginal style ignition switch was unusual too. When the ignition was turned off, what it did was ground that red wire, essentially creating a closed circuit all time so that the points opening and closing had no effect. Replacement type ignition switches either open or close the wire in the armored cable going to the distributor.
Where does the pink wire go in an ignition switch?
Ignition wire. Pink. The pink wire travels from the pink wire on the column, through the ballast resistor and out to the coil, or ignition system. This wire is hot in the run position and in the crank position.
What kind of ignition switch does a 1931 Ford have?
Because of that, the short black wire from the terminal box going to the primary winding in the coil will give you a voltage reading at either terminal on the coil. The orginal style ignition switch was unusual too.
