Is there a way to swap an ECU?
All your existing keys will remain usable and no other coding or matching is required. If you can locate a used ECU of same type, year, manufacturer, and have the SKC code for it, you should be able to swap it using VCDS (vag-com).
Is it possible to remove an ECU chip?
The chip itself can be removed from its cute little protective casing as shown below, from the back side of the key housing where the battery sits. Connect all that up and Wob’s your uncle. The only down side is the central locking won’t work. It needs to be reprogrammed to suit the new key hardware.
Why is the transponder ECU under the dash?
The reason for separating the Transponder ECU with the EEPROM storing the keys is that in the invent of lost keys, it would be cheaper for a dealership to replace the Transponder ECU than the Engine Control Unit. However its location under the dash means you will have to remove the entire dash pad.
How is the instrument cluster read in a car?
It is read by your car’s instrument cluster by inductive signal via a pick-up “ring” mounted on the ignition barrel lock. It needs no external power, and is very fragile.
Can a new ECU not be matched to an instrument cluster?
A new key that is not authorized/matched to the Instrument cluster can prevent successful ECU matching. For the following procedure, use the PIN of the REPLACEMENT (USED) ECU. The PIN needs to be entered as 5-digit number in the New Value box.
What are the prerequisites for ECU swapping?
Prerequisites: The NEW ECU is already installed in the car. Battery voltage at least 12.0 V. All relevant coding and adaptation values have been transferred from the ORIGINAL (OLD) ECU to the REPLACEMENT (NEW) ECU. Make sure to have the PIN of the CAR. Complete the following steps using one of the original vehicle keys!
What should battery voltage be for ECU swapping?
Battery voltage at least 12.5 V. All relevant coding and adaptation values have been transferred from the ORIGINAL (OLD) ECU to the REPLACEMENT (USED) ECU. Make sure to have BOTH PIN’s, from the ORIGINAL (OLD) and the REPLACEMENT (USED) ECU. Make sure to have the Radio Code (for factory radios only).
How to change the ECU on a Ross immobilizer?
A new key that is not authorized/matched to the Instrument cluster can prevent successful ECU matching. For the following procedure, use the PIN of the REPLACEMENT (USED) ECU. The PIN needs to be entered as 5-digit number in the New Value box. For example, if your PIN is 1234, enter 01234. [Do it!] Enter 050 in “Channel Number”.
