Is there a way to bypass the NSS?
I realize bypassing the NSS is not a long-term solution as the boat will start in gear and the associated safety hazards. My plan is to bypass it and if that fixes my problem, replace the neutral safety switch. Below is a picture of the ignition switch with three terminals labelled B I & S.
How does a neutral safety switch work on a car?
They show two “B-Y” wires that are connected together in “park” and “neutral” by the range sensor. One of those wires puts twelve volts onto a terminal for the engine computer labeled “STA” which is probably for the starter circuit, but I am not sure I am ready to make that assumption.
Do you bypass the ignition switch or remove the throttle Assembly?
Do I bypass it at the ignition switch or do I have to remove the throttle assembly to bypass it. Re: How to bypass the neutral safety switch? Re: How to bypass the neutral safety switch? They are usually joined to the yellow/reds in the ignition switch harness and the engine harness by bolt and nut (with an insulating sleeve over them)..
When does a computer switch to neutral safety?
All this switching takes place at the right times as you move the shift lever, with no gaps or overlaps. When that does not occur exactly at the correct times, the computer is going to do something undesired. The good news is there are two clues you can look for related to the range sensor.
What is a neutral safety switch and what it does?
The neutral safety switch is a safety device that only allows you to start your engine when the automatic transmission is in either Park or Neutral . The purpose of the neutral safety switch is to prevent the car from starting while in gear, which would cause it to launch forward unexpectedly.

Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, ensuring that it is away from all metal parts.
Is it a bad neutral safety switch?
The most obvious symptom of a bad neutral safety switch is when you can crank the engine in any gear. You could have the gear set to Drive or Reverse and still be able to crank it. If the engine is running, you will be able to crank it again too. This could lead to a serious car accident if this happens while you’re driving.
