What to do if your X Trail has a problem?
As a cheap and simple trouble-shooter, try running a few tanks of BP 98 or Caltex 98 through the car to clean out the fuel delivery system & sensors. Otherwise, the usual suspect is the 02 sensor system. May need replacement of the sensors.
What was the problem with my sisters Xtrail?
Funnily enough my sisters Xtrail (T30) Crank angle sensor failed last week (at 97k km) and both sensors were replaced today. The Mrs throttle body in her car failed last week, sourced another from a wrecker today to fit, so a bit of a bad run run with the cars of late.
How long does it take for The xtrail idle to smooth out?

On the surface, it sounds like you have a hydraulic issue, either with the clutch’s master or slave cylinder. Bleeding the hydraulics for the clutch and removing any air from the system would be the first step in diagnosing this problem and may fix it.
