The Pro4X is rated to tow close to 1200 lbs more and has a payload of 263 lbs over the PR. The only way I would purchase a PR over a Pro4X is if I didn’t plan to use it for the purpose it was designed for, but then I doubt I would be looking at the XD.

If the truck receptacle shows ok, the problem is with the trailer plug or further back with the trailer wiring/bulbs. For a factory mounted tow pkg, I would expect the truck to be ok, but a wiring issue in the trailer might have taken out fuses for turns/hazards and/or brakes causing you not get the correct response from the truck.
