1987-1990 had a boss drilled and tapped to accept the knock sensor (deleted for 1991,) and while 1991-2006 retained the boss, it went unmachined. There may have been differences in the mount pads between the YJ/TJ and the XJ/MJ/ZJ/WJ, I’ve not yet confirmed this.

Where is the crankshaft position sensor on a Jeep Cherokee?
This is no cause for concern… as long as you keep in mind that the connector locking tab is on top (in the photo), the circuits (wires) will be the same. The crankshaft position sensor, on your 4.0L Jeep equipped SUV, is a Hall-Effect three wire crankshaft position sensor.
