Is the front brake on the left or the right?
I bought my very first road bike a couple of weeks ago through eBay and it has been set up with the front brake on the left and the rear on the right (contrary to any of the single speeds I have been riding for the last year or so) and, having read up on the pros and cons of such a set up at Sheldon Brown, I fully intend to swap them around.
What’s the best way to use the rear brake?

What kind of brake does a GM FWD vehicle use?
A prime example of this are GM FWD vehicles that are equipped with duo-servo rear drum brakes. Most FWD vehicles use a non-servo rear drum brake because of the braking balance of a FWD vehicle. These GM vehicles are “over-braked” in the rear which makes them very sensitive to rear brake problems.
Which is the right side of the brake lever?
In “coaster-brake countries,” the handlebars were still empty, so the brake lever for the front brake went on the right side (below). When racers started using rim brakes on both wheels, the extra brake lever (for the rear wheel) went on the left side.
How are distribution blocks used in drum brakes?
Drum brake vehicles use a distribution block to turn your pedal press into brake line pressure at all four wheels. Metering blocks balance out the activation of the rear drum brakes and front disc brakes, preventing nose-dive.
Why do you need a metering block for rear drum brakes?
Metering blocks balance out the activation of the rear drum brakes and front disc brakes, preventing nose-dive. Because drum brakes lock up more easily than disc brakes, vehicles with rear drums use a proportioning valve to moderate the pressure to them. Adjustable proportioning valves let you tune that cut-off pressure.
