How do my students join Newsela?
- Class Link. Go to the Class Link. By following the on-screen instructions to sign in or create an account, join the class.
- Class Code. Go to newsela.com. Click your initials in the upper right-hand corner. Under the classes section of your account page, enter the Class Code in the box and click “Add a Class.”

How do I use Newsela in Google Classroom?
Create an assignment in Newsela, by clicking the assign button and following the prompts. Once your assignment has been created, click Share at the top of the page. Choose Google Classroom from the pop-up menu. This will open Google Classroom in a new tab.
How do I submit assignments to Newsela?
To submit a writing response, follow these steps:
- Go to an article.
- Open the Activities panel by clicking Activities in the upper right-hand corner.
- Click Write.
- Select the class for your response.
- Enter your response. Your work will be autosaved.
- Click Submit Response.
Can students access Newsela without an account?
Anyone can join Newsela as a student to read articles and complete writing responses and annotations. As a student, you only need one Newsela account. You can keep using that Newsela account every year, for all of your classes.
Can I link Newsela to Google classroom?
Students must be signed into both Newsela and Google Classroom to be directed to the article you share. Sign in to Google Classroom and Newsela. In Google Classroom, click the link to your Newsela article in the assignment.
What can you do with the free version of Newsela?
The free version of Newsela does not give you access to student data but students have access to their own progress on assignments. This is a great opportunity to schedule 1:1 conferences with students and have them share their progress with you while taking ownership of their learning.
