If the atv will not shift at all, neither by the electric shift buttons or with the emergency shifter then it could be a bent shift fork or the shift reduction gear. The shift reduction gear can loose teeth in random spots around the radius of the gear causing shifting problems.

There isnt really any “tell tale” problems with the rancher 420’s…or any real honda for that matter….its all dependant upon the previous owners upkeep. if he used it for water riding, steer clear, your almost garunteed to have some sort of electrical problem down the road.
