Does indexing spark plugs work?
In most engines, performance will improve when the spark plug gap opens toward the intake valve(s). Indexing spark plugs will typically make only a few more horsepower – usually less than 1% of total engine output. For a 500 hp engine, that’s only 5 hp. It is usually not worth the effort.
Can you install spark plugs wrong?
Incorrectly removing or installing spark plugs can cause damage to your engine. It’s possible to damage the threads inside the engine when installing the spark plug.
Is it easy to install spark plugs?
Changing spark plugs takes about an hour (for a four-cylinder engine) and will save you at least a hundred bucks in labor if you do it yourself. In most cases it’s a simple job that will help to maintain peak performance and the highest possible gas mileage.
Do Optimax spark plugs need to be indexed?
Yes – to the antiseize on the threads. No – to the indexing of the spark plugs. Mercury engines don’t require indexing. Evinrude engines require the indexing.
What’s the difference between NGK BPR9ES and BR9ES?

What’s the difference between BR9ES and BR8ES?
The heat range of a spark plug is indicated by the number in the plug’s identification sequence. On NGK spark plugs, the lower the number the hotter the plug (higher numbers are colder). Thus, your NGK BR9ES is colder than a BR8ES.

Why is my E-TEC 600 not running?
The other day we saw a 2009 E-TEC 600 with 7,200 miles that started to run erratically, and sure enough, it had the original plugs in there and the center electrodes were quite worn, thus the gap was really wide. When an E-TEC doesn’t run right it’s almost always the spark plugs (worn) or the fuel filter (obstruction) from what we’ve seen.
Why are my spark plugs fouled in my E-TEC?
Hate to mention names, but quite often when a popular red fuel stabilizer is used in the spring we will see fouled plugs the next fall. Granted this is probably the most used fuel stabilizer out there, but it seems to be the one that causes the most fouled plugs in an E-TEC.
When do spark plugs need to be pre gapped?
The plugs should come pre-gapped but always checked before installing them. I replaced mine at 800 miles (from new) and they were pig rich and both electrodes were burned down well out of spec. They need to be indexed so the gap is open towards the injector.
