Why is my 660 front drive shaft failing?

I started a new thread to try and keep the instructios to repair the drive shafts a little easier, both my 660s were failing the front drive shaft splines due to mud and water getting in the splines. On one I had to replace the trans coupler and on the other I was able to use the existing couplers.
